Site of the Nation’s First Successful Beet Sugar Factory

Built in 1870 by E. H. Dyer, called the “Father of the American Beet Sugar Industry,” this small factory stood on a corner of Dyer’s farm and began processing sugarbeets on November 15, 1870. During its first operating season, it produced 293 tons of sugar. The plant has since been completely rebuilt on the original site.
