Thor Temple is a 6,741-foot summit on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, rising about 4,300 feet above the Colorado River. Its name reflects the canyon’s tradition of giving major landforms mythological names; geologist François E. Matthes applied the name for Thor, the Germanic god of thunder and son of Wotan, following Clarence Dutton’s naming practice. A variant, Thors Hammer, also appeared, and the official name was adopted in 1906 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The summit exposes layers of the Supai Group above the Redwall Limestone, Tonto Group, and older Unkar Group, with runoff draining toward Clear Creek.
