The Trough is a secluded six-mile wooded gorge where the South Branch Potomac River cuts through the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia between Mill Creek Mountain and Sawmill Ridge. Crossing from Hardy County into Hampshire County, it is notable for its steep enclosing ridges, forested slopes, rock outcrops, and scattered boulders along the shore. The stretch is valued as a scenic Class I-II canoeing and kayaking route with primitive campsites and is also known for bald eagle habitat followed by the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. In 1756, during the French and Indian War, the area was also the site of the Battle of the Trough.
