Nathaniel Mountain is a ridge in Hampshire County in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, extending southwest to northeast between the South Branch Potomac River and South Branch Mountain. Rising to 2,739 feet, it is largely protected within the Nathaniel Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Its rugged slopes are covered mainly in mature oak and hickory forest with Virginia pine and support neo-tropical migratory birds and game species including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, squirrels, black bears, and grouse. The mountain also contains unusual high-elevation forested wetlands, including two identified by The Nature Conservancy, where plants such as sphagnum moss and cinnamon fern grow, while Mill Run provides habitat for rainbow trout and native brook trout.
