On November 24, 1863, Carlin's Brigade of Johnson's Division in Palmer's Corps, commanded by Brig. Gen. William P. Carlin and composed of the 104th Illinois, 38th Indiana, 42nd Indiana, 88th Indiana, 2nd Ohio, 33rd Ohio, 94th Ohio, and 10th Wisconsin, moved at 2 P.M. from near Fort Negley, with the 10th Wisconsin excepted because it had been detailed to occupy Fort Sheridan. The brigade crossed Chattanooga Creek near its mouth on a flatboat and, under orders from General Hooker, climbed Lookout Mountain to Cravens. After dark it relieved the troops on General Geary's line between the foot of the palisades and a point 150 yards below the Cravens House, and it held that part of the line until the Confederates withdrew at 2 A.M. on the 25th.
