Gwinnett County purchased the land for Little Mulberry Park in three parcels from 1998 to 2001, and the park officially opened in 2004. The property includes 890 acres of diverse landscape with two man-made lakes and dams, pastures, and woodlands. Within the park, a ridge in the West Meadow off the Fence Road entrance rises to 1,112 feet, making it one of the highest points in Gwinnett County, and it contains montane plant species. Little Mulberry Park also includes 404 acres acquired from the Miller family in 2005, part of which was set aside as the Karina Miller Nature Preserve. The Karina Miller Preserve Loop Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2012. A trail connecting the north and south portions of the park dates back more than 100 years and was once a nineteenth century carriage route. The park also contains stone mound sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places, whose origins remain disputed between Native Americans and early settlers.
