Double Bridges was an ante-bellum Alabama Road crossing of the Flint River at Owens Island, 1.25 miles north of the old DuBignon Ferry and 2.5 miles northeast of this point. Wilson’s cavalry seized Columbus on April 16, 1865. On the 17th, Minty’s division was sent to blaze a trail to Macon. Minty sent the 4th Michigan and 3d Ohio Cavalry under Colonel B. D. Pritchard on a night march to secure the Flint River crossing at Double Bridges, guarded by 50 Georgia Cavalry Reserves under Major N.C. Osborn. In a surprise attack with overwhelming forces, Pritchard seized the island and the two bridges. Wilson’s Raiders followed on April 18-19, via Talbotton, Belleview, Pleasant Hill and Thomaston.
