At Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, the first cannon ball was fired at the outbreak of the War Between the States. It was given in 1861 by P.W. Alexander, a leading Confederate war correspondent who was present when it was fired and knew it to be the first, to Mrs. Sallie White, who later presented it to the U.D.C.
