During the American Revolution, Puddin’ Swamp and the Black River lay on the frontier, where brave and adventurous pioneer families settled on higher ground near the rivers. These pioneers cooked over open fires, grew their food, tapped pines for rosin, and poled supplies along the rivers. General Francis Marion was totally dependent on farmers who responded to his call to arms, and he is shown here visiting a farmer-soldier family.
