MyHaven, the Melvyn Maxwell and Sara Stein Smith House in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian home built in 1949 and 1950 for two Detroit public school teachers. Inspired by Wright’s work as early as 1939, the Smiths pursued the commission for years, overcoming wartime interruption, limited finances, and the challenges of construction by collaborating closely with Wright and carefully controlling costs. The finished house embodied Wright’s ideals of affordable, well-designed living through its low horizontal form, radiant heat, passive solar planning, and strong connection to its wooded site. Later modest changes preserved its character, and it remains significant as both an architectural achievement and a personal testament to persistence and devotion.
