Emily Margaret Brown Austin Bryan Perry, born near Austinville, Virginia, like her brother Stephen Fuller Austin, moved with her parents Moses Austin and Maria Brown Austin to Missouri in 1798, where the family operated lead mines and founded Potosi south of St. Louis. After attending schools in Kentucky and New York, she returned to Missouri in 1812, married James Bryan in 1813, and had five children at Hazel Run, Missouri. Following James Bryan’s death, she supported herself by taking boarders and teaching school. In 1824 in Missouri, she married James Franklin Perry, and they had six children. By the end of 1831, the Perry family, including Emily, James, four Bryan children, two Perry children, James’s niece, and nine slaves, had joined Stephen in Texas. They settled at San Felipe and built a house at Stephen’s Peach Point Plantation, where they provided a home and counsel for her bachelor brother. The Bryan and Perry children contributed greatly to the development of Texas; her sons served as soldiers and statesmen and preserved the Austin bloodline. Emily died at Peach Point shortly after a trip to Philadelphia and was buried at Gulf Prairie Cemetery.
