Pass A L'Outre Light, a lighthouse near the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana's Birdfoot Delta, guided ships through what was once an active eastern channel until silting made the route too shallow and the station was abandoned. The tower itself was moved there in 1855 from Head of Passes Light, making use of what had been the nation's tallest cast-iron lighthouse. Its history reflects both war and the delta's instability: Civil War damage interrupted service, storms repeatedly battered the station, and the structure steadily sank into the mud. Deactivated in 1930, it now stands isolated in marshland as a highly endangered remnant of lower Mississippi navigation.
