Pass a Loutre Wildlife Management Area
Nature
Pass a Loutre Wildlife Management Area is a 115,000-acre protected wetland at the mouth of the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana, encompassing parts of the lower delta and accessible only by boat or air. Its marshes, mudflats, and salt-influenced habitats support deer, alligators, fish, and large numbers of resident and migratory birds, including Audubon priority species. Especially significant at the end of the Mississippi Flyway, it serves one of North America’s major migration routes. Ongoing management has focused on building and sustaining marsh through sediment diversions, reef and restoration projects, even as invasive mealybugs have severely damaged Roseau cane habitat since 2017.
