Fort Jackson was built from 1822 to 1832 to protect the lower river and was named for Andrew Jackson. In 1862, the fort withstood a 10-day siege by Farragut and surrendered after the city fell. In 1898 and 1917-18, it was used as a training base. In 1961, the fort was declared a national monument.
