Built in 1895 by William Buxton as two businesses measuring 22 feet by 28 feet on the east side of the square, 116 North Howard became part of Indianola's history through a succession of uses and rebuildings. For its first thirty-two years, it housed a shoe store, and after surviving a fire in 1926 it was restored as a shoe store again. Just before the stock market crash of 1929, the business changed hands and became a millinery shop. After World War II, the storefront became Clark's Barber Shop. Following another fire, the building was completely redone in 1962. Five years later, People's Bank bought the Clark building to expand its facilities, removing the partition between the two buildings and adding space at the rear. The arcade between the square and alley is all that remains of 116 North Howard.
