Lake Ahquabi State Park in Warren County, Iowa, developed around a 115-acre reservoir whose name means “resting place” in the Fox language. Recommended by J.N. “Ding” Darling, the site began as Indianola State Park when the city acquired its first 560 acres in 1934. Civilian Conservation Corps Company 769 and a side camp shaped the park between 1934 and 1937 by building the dam, reservoir, and major facilities. After sediment and agricultural runoff damaged the lake, a major restoration in the mid-1990s improved water quality and habitat. The park remains significant for its CCC-era Rustic architecture, outdoor recreation, and later environmental recovery.
