Brothers Calvin and William Barrett came to Texas during the early 1850s and settled in Titus County in 1853, where the area became known as the community of Barrett. In 1892 the community's name changed to Winfield in honor of the general passenger agent for the Texas and St. Louis Railway. The earliest marked graves in Winfield Cemetery are those of mother and daughter Mary E. Binnion Smith and Cora Smith, who both died in 1898. It is also the final resting place of Winfield's first doctor, Ralph Leslie Beck, and contains graves of veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War.
