Corona del Mar State Beach in Newport Beach, California, is a 30-acre protected coastal park established in 1947 and operated by the city. Known locally as Big Corona, it occupies shoreline once famous for surfing before changes to Newport Harbor works reshaped local waves. In the late 1930s, the harbor jetty extension helped form The Wedge as a major surf break while reducing most swells reaching Corona del Mar except those from the south. The beach also holds an important place in surf history because, in 1925, Duke Kahanamoku used a surfboard there in a rescue after a fishing vessel capsized in heavy surf.
