Live Oak County preserved the legacy of Geronimo, George West's favorite steer, by placing him in an all-glass structure on the courthouse grounds in 1927. In 1976, an updated Geronimo traveled to Moscow as part of the American Bicentennial Exhibition, then returned to a newly constructed enclosure that replaced the original 1927 structure. He remained there until 2015, when the community determined that restoration was again needed. A small committee formed for the George West 100 Year Centennial Celebration launched a Restore Geronimo campaign, and privately raised funds restored him to his original glory. Outfitted with a longhorn red roan hide and a body reflecting his original 2000-pound size, Geronimo stands as a symbol of Live Oak County's longhorn legacy in a glass-enclosed corral that mirrors his original 1927 structure and is intended to preserve him for years to come.
