Colchuck Peak is an 8,705-foot granite mountain in Washington’s Stuart Range whose name, derived from Chinook jargon for “cold water” or “ice,” comes from the lake below. Though not the highest summit, it rises abruptly above Colchuck Lake and Ingalls Creek, giving it an especially dramatic local prominence. The peak stands within the Mount Stuart batholith and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, in a landscape shaped by tectonic activity, volcanism, and repeated Pleistocene glaciation, with the last major retreat beginning about 14,000 years ago. Its steep, snow-heavy Cascade setting remains hazardous, as shown by a fatal avalanche there in February 2023.
