Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Pennsylvania preserves the remains of the Pine Grove Iron Works within the South Mountain landscape, where industry, recreation, and conservation overlap. Iron production began here in 1764 and continued until 1895, later joined by Laurel Forge, a brick and slate company, and rail lines that connected the site to wider markets. Water management shaped both its industry and its hazards, as floods twice breached Laurel Dam. After the industrial era, the land became part of South Mountain Forest and then a state park, with Civilian Conservation Corps work helping create its modern form. Today its lakes, trails, and historic buildings reflect that layered past.
