In Pine Grove Furnace State Park near Gardners, Pennsylvania, the Appalachian Trail Museum preserves the history and living culture of the Appalachian Trail through exhibits on its builders, maintainers, hikers, and founding vision. Opened in 2010 in the Old Mill Building of the former Pine Grove Iron Works, it was the first museum in the United States devoted to a hiking trail. Its collections include a 1959 trail shelter built by Earl Shaffer, historic equipment and signs, a recreation of Benton MacKaye’s office, Smithsonian loans, and material on the National Trails System Act of 1968. It also houses a research library and the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
