Millicent Fenwick lived from 1910 to 1992 and worked throughout her life to promote civil rights, consumer interests, prison reform, and ecological conservation. Beginning in 1938, she served on the Bernardsville Board of Education and the Bernardsville Borough Council. From 1970 to 1974, she served as a New Jersey State Assemblywoman and as Director of Consumer Affairs. At age 64, in 1975, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where she served four terms as one of only sixteen Congresswomen among 432 members. President Reagan appointed her United States Ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome from 1983 to 1987. She lived with courage and conviction and said she wanted to be remembered as one who was useful.
