The Cleveland Museum of Art, in Wade Park at University Circle, is one of Cleveland’s defining cultural institutions and among the world’s most visited art museums. Founded in 1913 through gifts from Hinman Hurlbut, John Huntington, and Horace Kelley, it opened in 1916 in a white Georgian marble Beaux-Arts building by Hubbell & Benes. Known for free general admission and a collection of more than 61,000 works, it is especially noted for Asian and Egyptian art alongside major European, modern, and contemporary holdings. Repeated expansions, including a major 2001–2014 renovation, enlarged the museum into a vast campus while preserving its mission of serving “all people, forever.”
