Founded in 1920 by Cyrus S. Eaton, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History grew from Cleveland’s early scientific societies and from the Ark, a small natural history collection begun by William Case on Public Square in 1836. After successive moves, it settled at Wade Park in 1958 and expanded with an observatory, planetarium, and exhibition halls. Its collections grew to millions of specimens, including notable fossil fish, the Hamann-Todd Collection, Haplocanthosaurus, Balto, Lucy, and important mineral holdings. The museum has also contributed to major scientific discoveries and civic institutions while evolving into a leading center for research, education, and public exhibitions.
