Founded in 1867 in Cleveland, the Western Reserve Historical Society is the oldest cultural institution in Northeast Ohio and a major center for preserving and presenting the region’s history. Beginning as a branch of the Cleveland Library Association, it grew from an antiquarian society into one of the nation’s largest private historical societies, with extensive archives, manuscripts, and the world’s largest collection of Shaker materials. Its Cleveland History Center brings together museums, historic houses, and notable collections, while Hale Farm and other properties extend its work beyond the city. Since the 1960s, it has also actively documented minority communities and labor history across Northeast Ohio.
