In 1797, Louis Philippe, King of France, stopped at this tavern while traveling from Portsmouth, N.H., to Portland, Me., accompanied by his two brothers, the Duke De Montpensier and Count De Beaujolais, and Tallerand, afterward the noted French diplomatist. Lafayette also stopped here in 1825.
