Bauneg Beg Mountain in North Berwick, Maine, rises 860 feet above sea level and stands out in southern Maine enough to have guided mariners along the coast. Taller than nearby Mount Agamenticus, it overlooks a landscape of rolling forested hills, broad stream valleys, and many swamps. It is also unusual as the only mountain in the region without a radio tower on its summit. Beyond its visibility, the mountain has notable ecological importance as habitat for the small whorled pogonia, one of the rarest orchids in the eastern United States, along with the rare swamp saxifrage and Blanding's turtle.
