Holly River State Park is a central West Virginia mountain park on the Left Fork of the Holly River near Hacker Valley and, at 8,294 acres, the state park system’s second largest. It originated in a New Deal land rehabilitation project begun around 1937, with Farm Security Administration planning and Works Progress Administration labor, and was formally created in 1938 before the state acquired ownership in 1954. The park is known for extensive hiking, biking, and horseback trails, furnished 1930s cabins, a seasonal campground, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. It also preserves the relocated Windy Gap School and remains an active recreation site with summer programs and the annual Holly River Festival.
