Fort Pickens stood one hundred twenty yards northeast, where Company A of the 10th West Virginia Infantry built it for headquarters and defense. The company was raised by Captain Morgan A. Darnall and mustered into U.S. service on March 13, 1862. It fought in several battles down to Appomattox, including Beverly, Droop Mountain, Harpers Ferry, Opequon, Winchester, Leetown, Kernstown, Cedar Creek, Fishers Hill, Berryville, the Petersburg Siege, and the Appomattox surrender.
