The Winter Site is an archaeological site along Big Bay de Noc north of Garden, Michigan, about 1,000 feet inland on a small tributary. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, it preserves evidence of Middle Woodland occupation in two separate periods: a brief stay lasting one or two seasons and a later, longer settlement. Excavations by Western Michigan University in the mid-1970s showed that its inhabitants depended on fall-spawning fish. Because Lake Michigan’s shoreline then reached farther inland, the site is significant as an early experiment in coastal living during late fall and winter, later disrupted by flooding or a short rise in lake level.
