R.N. Buchwalter's Sport Store was the first full-service sporting goods business in Central Oregon. Known as Buck, Ralph N. Buchwalter offered auto accessories, a large selection of guns, ammunition, and fishing tackle, and the first pair of skis sold in Central Oregon came from this store. The entire upstairs of the 900 Wall Street building had the legal address 904 Wall. Buck's love of hunting, fishing, and Central Oregon led him to organize the first auto trips to the Skeleton Caves, Wind Caves, and Arnold's Ice Cave east of Bend. He also helped found and establish the Sky-Liners Ski Club, a forerunner of Mount Bachelor and now one of the top ski resorts in the nation. Like many businesses, this milestone enterprise succumbed to the Great Depression of the 1930s.
