Dedicated in 1882, this fifty-foot monument honors Augusta's Civil War dead with a figure of a woman representing Patriotism guarding the honor of her martyred sons. She holds an American flag and the sword that saved the nation. Bronze panels show the seals of the United States and the State of Maine, and a trophy displays infantry, artillery, and cavalry arms. Three panels depict war scenes: duty in a farmer called to fight, the cost of war in combat and death, and the return in happiness and grief. Two tablets complete the monument, one listing the Augusta men who died and the other honoring her heroic sons who died in the war for the Union and commending their example to succeeding generations.
