Ohio County's first jail and courthouse was a combined two-story log structure built in 1799-1800. Its second-story courtroom was of well-hewed logs, with a raised bench for the court, a bar for the attorneys, and bannisters and rails. The building collapsed in 1813, and the salvaged material was burned to celebrate Commodore Perry's victory on Lake Erie.
