Blackford County honored those from the county who answered their country’s call in World War I from Apr. 6th 1917 to Nov. 11th 1918, presenting an Honor Roll of local service members under the words “Lest We Forget” and “Our Boys.” A star identified those who died in service, and the memorial also bore a tribute promising that when the service flag had faded and the hands it caressed had been folded calm and peaceful on each mother’s loving breast, “the Torch they passed unto us” would be borne forever on and defended by the living, who, like them, would “Carry On.”
