Sawnee Mountain is a five-mile ridge in north Georgia and the highest point in Forsyth County, rising above the surrounding terrain where the Piedmont meets the Appalachian foothills. Its five knolls and three gaps make it a prominent landmark in the northern Atlanta area, with the natural clearing called the Indian Seats among its best-known features. Local tradition links the mountain’s name to a Cherokee man remembered for helping settlers before being forced west on the Trail of Tears. Gold mining spread onto the ridge after the 1829 Auraria discovery, and much of the mountain is now protected as the Sawnee Mountain Preserve.
