The first road paved in Greenville was a downtown section of Lafayette Street. To prepare it, workers plowed the road and removed the surface, mostly gravel that had been laid down to stabilize the native sand. The road was crowned in the center and sloped gently toward the sidewalks. After it was cleared, a thick cement foundation was laid, followed by a layer of sand, then brick pavers, with more cement added to fill the cracks. Each paver weighed 10 pounds, and the construction process attracted crowds of interested onlookers. Today, the brick walkway through the museum garden is made of pavers from Greenville's original paved streets.
