Story Mound is a Native American earthwork in Cincinnati’s Sayler Park near the Ohio River and one of the surviving archaeological sites connected to the region’s prehistoric past. Although it has never been excavated, it has been identified as an Adena culture work based partly on bones found in the surrounding land and its possible relation to a broader local cluster of Adena sites. Its greatest importance lies in its undisturbed, unexcavated condition, which leaves its archaeological potential intact. That significance, along with the possibility that it is part of a larger nearby complex, led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
