Armstrong County was formed March 12, 1800, out of Westmoreland, Allegheny, and Lycoming counties. It was named for General John Armstrong, who had destroyed the Indian Village at Kittanning in 1756. Here, the county seat was laid out in 1803, and the "Daugherty Visible" typewriter was invented in 1881.
