Lewis Fork Wilderness is a protected mountain area in southwestern Virginia near Konnarock, set on the southeast side of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Established by Congress in 1984 under the Eastern Wilderness Act, it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service to preserve natural conditions through limits on motorized access, bicycles, group size, and camping. Its central feature is Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest point, within a landscape of steep elevation changes, divided watersheds, and notably high-quality trout streams. The wilderness also stands out for diverse forest communities, wet habitats, and a cool, hushed upper mountain environment shaped by frequent cloud cover.
