Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest natural point at 5,729 feet, stands on the border of Grayson and Smyth counties in the state’s far southwest. Much of the mountain lies within the Lewis Fork Wilderness and the broader Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in Jefferson National Forest. Named for geologist William Barton Rogers, it is notable not only for its wooded summit and popular hiking access, but also for its exceptional natural history. Its rocks preserve evidence of ancient volcanic activity and Virginia’s only known signs of Proterozoic glaciation. Its upper slopes also shelter a rare spruce-fir forest, while the surrounding highlands are known for free-ranging wild ponies.
