Southford Falls State Park is a 169-acre recreation area in Oxford and Southbury, Connecticut, centered on Eight Mile Brook and known for its waterfalls, covered bridge, fishing, trails, and fire tower. Its scenery also preserves a long industrial history. The brook’s steep descent from Lake Quassapaug toward the Housatonic River once powered gristmills, sawmills, and workshops for iron workers, button makers, knife makers, and clothiers, and its channel was altered to increase water flow. Around the turn of the 20th century, the Diamond Match Company built a cardboard matchbox factory here. After a second fire destroyed it, the land passed to the state, and the park opened in 1932 as a major recreation and trout-fishing destination.
