The Paugussett Trail is a Blue-Blazed hiking route of about 14 miles in Connecticut’s lower Housatonic River valley, running through Shelton and Monroe by way of Indian Well State Park, Webb Mountain Park, and the Shelton Lakes Greenway. It passes lakes, river overlooks, and wooded parkland, while also preserving traces of older land use such as a charcoal mound and the former Monroe Rod and Gun Club chimney. Named for the Paugussett people, the trail originated in the Depression era with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration work. Once far longer, it was heavily shortened by postwar development, then partly extended again in 2012.
