Lava Island Falls is a challenging set of rapids on the Deschutes River, not a sheer waterfall. Its dangerous Class 5 whitewater was created by volcanic forces when lava from Lava Butte formed an island that blocked part of the river and narrowed the channel. That geologic change produced the swift, hazardous flow associated with the falls. The site is significant for the way it combines the Deschutes River with a striking lava landscape and for its reputation as one of the river’s more difficult whitewater stretches.
