Barnett's Station was the site of one of the earliest forts erected in this area. It was established by brothers Joseph and Alexander Barnett, who came from Virginia to Kentucky in the early 1780s. The settlement was frequently raided by Indians. During an attack in April 1790, two children were killed, and Hannah Barnett, the ten-year-old daughter of Joseph, was carried off and held captive for six months.
