David Stoops arrived here in 1805 with Amos Butler. He received a land grant for 160 acres at this site in 1811 and acquired another 150 acres in 1817. A large cabin stood just south of this cemetery. During his first year, he singlehandedly cleared 11 acres of virgin forest. He was the father of 25 children whose descendants live throughout Indiana. He was buried in Rutland, Indiana.
