Levi Rock Shelter, west of Austin along Lick Creek, is an important archaeological site named for former property owner Malcolm Levi. Known for Paleo-Indian artifacts dating back ten thousand years or more, it was discovered in the mid-1950s and has been described as the seventh-oldest Paleolithic site in the United States. Artifacts found there include Clovis points, carved bone cylinders, scrapers, awls, needles, punches, and incised and painted pebbles, many now cared for by the University of Texas. Its significance was formally recognized with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, even as nearby development has raised preservation concerns.
