Hippie Hollow Park, on Lake Travis in northwest Austin, is Texas’s only legally recognized clothing-optional public park. Long used for nude swimming when the shoreline was relatively remote, it grew more popular in the 1960s, and the name Hippie Hollow emerged after Woodstock. Though controversy rose in the 1970s, local law enforcement generally gave skinny-dipping low priority if no other laws were broken. Originally called McGregor Park, the site was leased to Travis County in 1983 and opened under its current name in 1985. After legal challenges, the county preserved its clothing-optional status, while limiting admission in 1995 to adults over 18.
