Swartswood State Park in Sussex County, established in 1915, is generally regarded as New Jersey’s first state park created specifically for recreation. Centered on glacial Swartswood Lake, the park reflects both ancient natural forces and the state’s early conservation movement. Its creation followed years of debate over public access to the lake, culminating in the 1914–1915 purchase of lake and surrounding acreage from the Albright family. Expanded over time, the park now protects lakes, streams, wildlife habitat, and the site of Keen’s Grist Mill, while supporting year-round recreation including hiking, swimming, boating, camping, fishing, and birdwatching.
