Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal, also called D. Henrique, Infante de Sagres, lived from 1394 to 1460. His explorations and scientific accomplishments dispelled the legend of the tenebrous sea, beaconed the ocean route to India, and opened the gateway of the Atlantic to the American continent.
